I named my technique the “bite diet” because that describes what the person does – take bites instead of eating full meals. The way it works is that you eat the same foods you normally eat, except you break them up and don’t eat everything at the same time. For example, if you normally eat a plate of pancakes and eggs for breakfast what you would do is eat only about ¼ of the meal and stop eating. About 30 minutes later you would eat another ¼, and stop. Then 30 minutes later you would eat another ¼ and stop. You would keep doing this until the meal was finished. So, basically, it would take you 2 hours to eat that same plate of food! By that time it would be nearly time for lunch. Let’s say that for lunch you would eat a sandwich. You would take a bit or two of sandwich and then stop. You then wait 30 minutes and take some more bites. You can get the idea. What you are doing is more like eating snacks instead of entire meals, and this goes on all day until bedtime. Then you start all over the next day. When I had my mom try this method of eating she was able to lose weight very quickly, like 10 pounds in about 2 weeks. Unfortunately, she soon went back to eating the old normal way because she said it felt unnatural to keep eating with the bite diet. I was disappointed but I understood. Even though the technique was working, she had to be the one to keep using it so it was up to her whether or not she wanted to do it. There were only a few things bad about the bite diet, like your food getting cold and the difficulty in doing it when away from home. I know it was not perfect, but at least it was a way to lose weight without starving. In fact, my mom said she never really felt hungry while she did it, and her energy level had gone up.
Let me explain how I came up with my technique, and why I believe it was working. The first thing we have to think about is how the body works. A very important thing I realized is that the body actually likes storing fat. In other words, your body is always trying to make you overweight. That may sound strange but think of it this way: Your body is designed to survive, and surviving requires energy which we get from food. If you were stuck on a deserted island with no food you would live longer by being overweight than if you would if you were skinny. That’s because your body would be able to survive by getting energy it needs from body fat instead of from food. As long as you could drink water, even without eating, you wouldn’t die until you had lost all your body fat. You could survive longer by having body fat, and this is why your body likes storing fat, and thinks it is a good thing. This explains why so many people can become overweight and then have trouble losing it. It’s because their own body is working against them!
Another thing to know is that your body also is designed to do the things you need it to do. For example, if you work at a job lifting heavy things then your muscles will soon grow bigger so that you can do the work easier. What all this means is that your body is designed to change its shape depending on the situation. The reason people are different shapes and sizes is because they are in different situations. In order to get your body to lose weight you have to set up a situation that allows your body to lose the weight. Have you ever noticed that skinny people like to snack on food rather than sitting and eating big meals? They are usually on the go and are too busy to sit down and eat a large plate of food. They are involved with various activities and lead an active lifestyle. They even remain skinny when they eat junk food like cookies, chips, and soda. That’s because they move around so much with their active lifestyle that their body adjusts to be a thin shape to help them move easier. To lose weight it’s a very good idea to make sure that every day you have a situation where you move around a lot, and I don’t mean exercise. I mean just get outside and go shopping, or do work, or visit friends. Don’t sit and do nothing. As long as you stay active then your body will begin to think that it is better to let go of the extra weight, because it’s easier to move with less weight and your body will figure that out!
Now, being active is not the only thing that you need to do to lose extra weight. Your body will still try to hold on to the weight even if you are active. Your body still thinks surviving is the main goal, so storing fat is a good thing. The way it holds on is by making you eat enough food to carry around all the extra weight, especially food with high calories. High calories means higher amount of energy. As long as your body has enough energy to carry itself around then it will continue trying to hold on to the weight. This means that as long as you get full at meals, you probably won’t lose any weight – no matter how active you are.
Once I realized all these things about how the body makes decisions about storing weight I figured out how to make it let the weight go. When you eat a full meal your body will begin to take the energy from the meal as it digests. This gives you the energy to do whatever you need to do. Pretty soon you the meal will be gone and you will be hungry again, so you eat another meal. The body repeats the process. As long as you eat meals and get full, then you are giving your body all the energy it needs, so it has no reason to use any fat for energy. It holds onto the fat like keeping money saved in a bank. I then thought that if you could eat just a few bites of the meal the body would not have all the energy it would normally get from the meal. Since some energy would be missing it would think about using some fat, like spending some of the bank savings! Now, since you only had a few bites you would immediately be hungry again in a very short time. That’s okay, because you can eat more bites after 30 minutes to kill the hunger. This way you never feel like you are starving, but at the same time you don’t give your body all the energy of the full meal all at once. My technique actually encourages you to keep eating. You don’t ever want to have a hungry, or starving feeling. When you do that you put your body into what I call “emergency survival mode”. Remember what I talked about earlier with being stuck on a deserted island? Well, when you starve yourself that is the situation you are creating for your body. Your body will think that it really needs to hold on to fat because there is no food supply. It will be very stingy with losing any fat. It will only let some fat go when it absolutely has to do it. The more you starve yourself, the harder your body will hold onto fat. That’s why I don’t like any kind of starvation diet. It will take forever to lose the weight, and meanwhile you are always feeling hungry! That’s why people can’t stick to those kinds of diets! Starving for 2 weeks and only losing 1 pound would be very discouraging! But that’s exactly how the body would be working, because it would be doing its job of surviving for as long as possible using only the little food you ate.
With my bite diet technique you would never be starving. As soon as you start to get hungry again you could eat another few bites, as long as 30 minutes had passed. That sends the message to your body that everything is okay, and there is no food emergency. Now your body is able to let the weight go more freely. It knows that it needs some energy that it’s not getting from the bites, so it uses some fat. It does not need to be as careful holding on to the fat because it’s not in “emergency survival mode”.
Another great thing about my technique is that you can continue to eat the same kinds of food that you normally eat.
